Cruise Ship Claustrophobia - How to make the best of it.

This is my second cruise and I love lots of things about it. But I can get claustrophobia. We’re in an inside cabin and that is tougher than a room with a balcony.

When I get anxious I need to get out of the confined space immediately or I’ll…what? What will I do? I’m not sure - it feels like I’m going to explode or get hysterical.

Here are my tips:
  • I get hot, so I change shoes to sandals or go barefoot, put my hair up, water on my head, anything to cool down.
  • Change my state of mind: go for a walk in open areas, read a book, work a crossword or a Sudoku puzzle, make sure I’m oriented on the ship.
  • Do something relaxing: drink a herbal tea, listen to music, sit in a hot tub.
  • For lifeboat drills – I wait to put the vest on and take my time so I’m in front and not packed in.
  • Take my time and let others rush ahead. After all this is my vacation.

Think about it. Millions of people are in these small spaces and survive just fine. What’s the big deal? Take a deep breath…maybe a bunch of deep breaths. Close your eyes and relax.
